Stuck In Mumbai-Pune Expressway Jam On Feb 3? Are You Eligible For A Refund & How To Get It?

After deciding that commuters should pay only for a working expressway and not for those that are yet to be completed, officials have now taken another important step. Earlier this month, thousands of motorists were stuck in a massive traffic jam on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The good news? They will now get their money back. Scroll down to know more!

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Motorists To Get Toll Refund

On February 3, 2026, a gas tanker overturned on the Khopoli stretch of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway — and everything came to a complete halt. Traffic didn’t just slow down, it froze. As per NDTV, for more than 33 hours, vehicles were stuck in one place. People waited inside their cars for hours, struggling to find water, food, and other basic necessities. It turned into a long and exhausting experience for thousands of commuters.

Right after the accident, the administration quickly ordered toll collection to stop. Officials felt it would be unfair to charge motorists during such a major disruption. But here’s the catch: by the time the order was fully implemented, toll money had already been deducted from many vehicle owners’ FASTag accounts.

How Much Toll Will Be Refunded?

MSRDC has decided to return all the toll money that was collected, even after officials said toll collection should stop. According to NDTV, a senior official confirmed that the total refund comes to ₹5.16 crore, and more than one lakh motorists will benefit from it. The best part? You don’t have to fill out any forms or apply anywhere. The money will be directly credited to your FASTag account in the next few days.

The refund will cover tolls collected on both highways linked to the affected stretch. MSRDC has asked the toll operator to share detailed FASTag records, and officials are now checking every transaction carefully. In some cases, the system deducted toll money automatically before officials fully opened the toll barriers. Authorities will now return that money as well.
