Heavy rain and hail swept through parts of Sharjah on Thursday, 15 October, as the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) issued convective cloud and flash flood alerts across the UAE. Videos shared by Storm Centre showed intense showers over Al Dhaid, Washah and Mleiha, with hailstones covering the ground and cars ploughing through waterlogged roads.
What Alerts Did The NCM Issue?
The convective cloud alert ran from 12.30pm to 10pm. Yellow warnings covered large parts of the eastern region, from Ras Al Khaimah through Fujairah and the Hajar mountains, along with pockets of southern and western Abu Dhabi. Orange warnings were in place over parts of the eastern mountains. An orange alert means hazardous weather is expected, and residents should follow official advice.
What Do The Colour Codes Mean?
Under a yellow warning, residents heading out for outdoor activities are advised to stay alert. Orange is a step up and signals hazardous conditions, so official guidance should be followed closely.
Flash Flood Alert For Mountain Areas
A separate flash flood alert was valid from 2pm to 7pm over some mountain areas. The NCM urged residents to take care during rainfall and stay away from wadis and valleys.
Why Convective Clouds Matter
These clouds can build quickly and bring sudden heavy rain, hail, lightning and strong winds. Gusts can also stir up dust and cut visibility.
How Long Will The Wet Weather Last?
This spell is part of a longer period of unsettled weather. Rain is forecast across parts of the country through the weekend and into Monday, 19 October. Eastern and southern areas are expected to see the most cloud, mostly in the afternoons. Check the latest NCM bulletin before heading out, as alerts can change through the day.
