Mumbai’s Musical Road Faces Backlash From Residents
The most-talked-about musical patch in Mumbai was installed last month on the Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road in the Breach Candy area. The strips on this route play the iconic “Jai Ho” song from Slumdog Millionaire whenever a car passes over them. The idea was inspired by Hungarian technology and is part of the city’s plan to introduce a concept called “Sangeet Marg” on more stretches of the coastal road in the future.
This musical patch was launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde on February 12, 2026. While it felt fun and unique for drivers, it wasn’t the same for nearby residents. According to The Hindu, the Breach Candy ALM and Breach Candy Residents Forum complained that the music could be heard across more than 25 residential buildings, causing disturbance among people, especially the elderly. They later sent a formal complaint to the BMC commissioner.

How Did BMC Respond To The Complaints?
After receiving growing complaints, BMC officials checked the sound levels inside homes. They found the decibel readings to be between 60 and 65. Even though the levels were moderate, officials still decided to take action to address residents’ concerns.
The BMC then chose to barricade the musical patch during nighttime hours. The strips will now stay silent from 7 PM to 11 AM. A senior BMC officer told The Hindu that this step was taken to reduce noise disturbances. Residents have agreed with the decision and have also expressed their gratitude to the BMC officials.
