Public transport plays a crucial role in making travel easier for daily commuters. But now, Delhi’s public transport has been disrupted as DTC bus drivers and conductors continue their strike. Why Are Delhi Bus Drivers And Conductors On Strike?
As per DTC Karamchari Ekta Union, over 12,000 bus drivers and conductors are taking part in the strike. As per Moneycontrol, the union said that DTC bus drivers and conductors currently get ₹862 per day, which is the minimum wage set by the Delhi government.
However, the union believes this wage is meant for daily-wage workers and does not match the skills and responsibilities needed to drive large buses on Delhi’s busy roads. They are also questioning why trained and licensed bus drivers are being paid only the minimum wage. Also, as per the union, the allowance should be updated every six months but has not changed for the last one and a half years.

How Much Daily Wage Are Workers Demanding?
As per Union president Lalit Chaudhary, the workers are demanding:
- Minimum daily wage of ₹2,000
- Payment for all government holidays
- Annual bonus
- Better social security benefits, including a medical scheme
According to Moneycontrol, Delhi has around 6,840 DTC buses, while private agencies operating several of these buses are paid by the government on a per-kilometre basis. However, these agencies only pay workers the minimum wage.
With the strike continuing, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) came to the rescue. Delhi Metro ran 20 extra trips on Wednesday. There are also chances of eight additional trains between 8 AM and 8 PM.
