Delhi L-G Kicks Off 3-Year Yamuna Cleanup Campaign; Trash Skimmers And Weed Harvesters Deployed To Start The Effort

In a move to tackle the long-standing pollution problem in the Yamuna River, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor (L-G), VK Saxena, has launched an ambitious ‘four-pronged strategy’ to clean up the river over the next three years. In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge to clean the river, this initiative is launched just before the new BJP government is formed in the city.

Delhi L-G Launches ‘Four-Pronged Strategy’ To Clean Yamuna

The Delhi Raj Niwas has already kicked off the work and it is expected to evolve over time. Key machineries like trash skimmers, weed harvesters, and dredge utility crafts are already on site, News18 reported. These machines have begun their tasks at critical locations along the river, such as Vasudev Ghat, Signature Bridge, and ITO.

The Four Key Elements Of The Strategy

  1. The L-G’s plan focuses on addressing the riverbed’s contamination, which includes the removal of garbage, silt, and accumulated waste in the Yamuna’s stream.
  2. To reduce the entry of pollutants into the river, the strategy involves cleaning key drains like the Najafgarh Drain, Supplementary Drain, and all other major drains in the city.
  3. The existing sewage treatment plants will be closely monitored to ensure they function optimally. The government will also speed up the construction of new STPs and decentralised sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) on drains.
  4. The strategy will also aim at expanding sewage treatment capacity to meet the growing demands.

In a post on X (formerly, Twitter), the L-G’s office emphasised the need for smooth coordination between several agencies, including the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the Public Works Department (PWD), the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). Each of these bodies will play an important role in ensuring the cleanup efforts are executed on time.

Cleaning the Yamuna River is no small task. However, with this 3-year plan, there is hope that the river will reclaim its lost glory. This initiative is a significant step towards addressing one of Delhi’s most pressing environmental issues. A clean Yamuna will not only improve the city’s environment but also enhance the quality of life for millions who rely on its water.

So, as the machines start their work, the goal of a cleaner Yamuna is one step closer to becoming a reality.
