Delhi Records Coldest Temperature Yet At 2.4°C, Last Experienced In 1901

Delhi woke up to bone-chilling cold on Saturday morning with temperatures dropping to 2.4 degrees Celsius. At 6:10 AM, the city was engulfed by the lowest temperature yet. The only thing to do then is to go back to bed. It is Saturday, in our defence. The capital is witnessing its coldest December in over 2 decades. We’re being led headfirst into a cold ending to 2019 since December 14. The weather forecast now says we can expect the second-coldest December since 1901. Delhi has broken another record. We’ve seen the highest number of cold days since 1997; the number stands at 11.

What is it

The India Meteorological Department recorded a high of 13.4 degrees Celsius this month. That’s 7 degrees below normal making our days just as hard as the nights. So, sip chai, load up on the blankets and put up a bonfire every night. If it’s going to be cold, we might as well make the most of it. The weather forecast has warned us of “cold to severe” conditions this weekend. That means, things are about to get worse, or better, it’s all about perspective.

What’s more

A dense fog as notoriously reduced visibility in Delhi NCR. Up to four flights have been diverted and as many as 24 trains are delayed. Visibility was recorded at less than 150 meters. You literally could not see the road ahead. How do we pick the road less travelled if we can’t see it? Air officials feel the same way, so they chose to turn away and maybe come back later. It was reported that flights are operating within a visual range of 50 – 175 meters. Delhi Witnesses Coldest December In 20 Yrs As Temperature Drops 10 Degrees Below Normal!

There’s some good news for those of us who would rather be hot than cold. Delhi weather could see rise in temperature after December 29 according to the India Meteorological Department. December 31st could set a rainy winter for a while in Delhi. After January 3, things are expected to change again. We’re thoroughly enjoying this cold winter. In the 1930s, Delhi saw temperatures dip to 0 degrees Celsius. We wonder if we’re going to get the pleasure of witnessing that this season.
