Delhi Airport Gets India’s First SkyCast System; What Is It & How Does It Work?

Flight delays and cancellations due to dense fog and bad weather are quite common. To tackle this problem, a smart solution was needed, and it looks like one has arrived. To reduce weather-related disruptions, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has installed India’s first SkyCast system. Read on to know what it is and how it works!

Delhi Airport Has Installed India’s First SkyCast System

Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh inaugurated India’s first SkyCast system at Delhi Airport on Friday, May 29. As per Hindustan Times, this new system will provide real-time weather updates and forecasts about conditions such as wind, temperature, humidity, fog, and other weather changes. With these updates, airport staff, pilots, and air traffic controllers can make better decisions, improve safety, and reduce flight delays or cancellations.

One of the biggest advantages of SkyCast is its ability to closely monitor fog conditions. This new system is especially beneficial for cities like Delhi, where fog and bad weather often reduce visibility and affect flight operations.

New System Can Monitor Several Atmospheric Parameters

According to GMR Aero officials, SkyCast can keep track of several weather conditions, including temperature, humidity, clouds, water vapour, and wind patterns. It can also identify potential weather-related risks for flights, such as strong wind changes, turbulence, icing, and dense fog, helping airport authorities and pilots take timely action for safer operations.

Hindustan Times also reported that the system provides fresh weather updates every five minutes and immediately sends alerts if it detects any potential weather-related risks. It can also give specific warnings for individual runways when conditions become unsafe. Additionally, the system follows global aviation safety standards. After Delhi, Jewar Airport is all set to get this SkyCast system.
