When we think of Delhi, one of the first things that comes to mind is “pollution.” People in the national capital often struggle with poor air quality, which can seriously affect their health. To tackle the growing environmental concerns, the University of Delhi has now stepped in with India’s first Carbon Garden. Read to know more!
India’s First Carbon Garden In Delhi
The University of Delhi has recently opened India’s first Carbon Garden. It was inaugurated by the University of Delhi Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh on Thursday, September 3. The garden was designed and developed by Dinabandhu Sahoo, a professor in the Department of Botany, on the lawn in front of the department, covering 2,000 sq. ft.
Speaking at the inauguration, Yogesh Singh said that people should act now, or Delhi will soon become the “pollution capital.” He also highlighted the need for appropriate steps to tackle the growing environmental crisis. He urged other departments and colleges of DU to set up similar carbon gardens on their campuses. The Vice Chancellor also warned against adopting building designs inspired by Western countries without considering India’s climate.

What Is Special About This Garden?
The newly opened Carbon Garden houses 45 plant species. It includes herbs, shrubs and trees. Not only that, but it also features different forms of life, such as algae, fungi, bacteria, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.
At this garden, you’ll also find spirulina, also known as Arthrospira, one of the oldest living organisms. But that’s not all! The plants and microorganisms in the garden help pull carbon dioxide and harmful pollutants from the air towards the ground, helping enrich depleted soil.
