The book market at Daryaganj has been around for over 20 years. Recently, when the Delhi High Court ordered its closure, bibliophiles stir up a storm to make sure that the beloved market isn’t shut down. And so, it got a new address!
Where is it?
Earlier, the book market was located at Daryaganj near Lal Qila, and now it will run at the Mahila Haat Ground, opposite Broadway Hotel in Chandini Chowk.
This iconic book market had been Delhi’s oldest and was the source of livelihood for many booksellers. Not just that, it was also the go-to place for book lovers who would be regulars and get some amazing deals on their favourite ones. From academic books to novels, there was something on the shelf for every member of the family.
At Mahila Haat book market, stall space has been allotted to 276 booksellers at the cost of Rs 170 per week.
After the court ordered the official closure of the book market, the sellers were offered five spaces to set it up at. The options were Ramlila Maidan, Hanuman Mandir (Yamuna Bazaar), Kachha Bagh, Mata Sundri Road and Mahila Haat. The market was set up at Daryaganj for the last time on July 21, and after that it was set up Mahila Haat on September 15. Only about a 100 booksellers had set up their stalls, but more are expected to do so in the coming days.
