Domestic Demand For Indian Airlines Rises By Nearly 15% In June 2023, 1.3% More Than In 2019

It is hard to find people who are not interested in travelling. Most of us try to take out some time and plan at least one trip every year. The restrictions and lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic were a tough time but now travel enthusiasts are exploring the world and ticking off destinations from their bucket lists. This year saw great momentum in the Northern summer travel season and domestic demand and here are all the details.

June Recorded A Great Start To The Northern Summer Travel Season; Domestic Demand Saw A Spike

International Air Transport Association shared about the continuation of post-pandemic travel recovery in the month of June. Willie Walsh, the Director General of IATA stated in a press release that the northern summer travel season saw great numbers in June. It had a great beginning in the month “with double-digit demand growth and average load factors topping 84 per cent”.

Airlines are benefitting as most flights are taking off with packed seats. It is also influencing the local economies of tourist destinations. Jobs that are dependent on the tourism industry are also noticing great changes. “All benefit from the industry’s ongoing recovery”, shared Willie Walsh.

Numbers Reported In Flight Traffic In June 2023:

  • The International Air Transport Association shared that the demand for domestic flights in Indian airlines saw a rise to 14.8 per cent. In comparison to June 2019, the demand increased 1.3 per cent.
  • Domestic traffic recorded a spike of 27.2 per cent in comparison to June 2022. It was 5.1 per cent more than in 2019 June.
  • In comparison to last year, the first 6 months of 2023 saw a 33.3 per cent rise in domestic flight demand.
  • For international traffic, the number rose to 33.7 per cent compared to the same month back in 2022. The international RPKs increased to 88.2 per cent in comparison to June 2019.
  • In comparison to the first half of last year, the first 6 months of 2023 saw an international traffic of 58.6 per cent.
  • The overall traffic in June 2023 increased 31 per cent in comparison to June 2022.
  • In comparison to the 2022 first half, the first 6 months of this year saw a traffic of 47.2 per cent.
  • The total traffic is at 94.2 per cent of pre-COVID times.

Domestic passenger markets such as Australia’s domestic traffic saw a change of 1.7 per cent decline in comparison to June 2022. In fact, it is the only market that recorded a year-over-year traffic decrease. On the other hand, air traffic recorded 3.9 per cent more than the times of pre-COVID.

These International Passenger Markets Saw A Traffic Climb In Comparison To June 2022:

  • African Airlines: 34.7 per cent
  • Asia-Pacific Airlines: 128.1 per cent
  • European Carriers: 14.0 per cent
  • Middle Eastern Airlines: 29.2 per cent
  • North American Carriers: 23.3 per cent
  • Latin American Airlines: 25.8 per cent
