by Vaishnavi Venkataraman

Dosa lovers behold! We’ve found a petite, age-old dosa joint in Sharjah that will satiate your craving for the Indian crepe. Dosa Plaza at Al Nahda is just where you must head to get your dosa fix. From the traditional sada dosa to the family favourite ‘four feet’ dosa and other fusion dosas, the restaurant whips over 35 varieties of dosas.

What’s It?

What started off as a tiny eatery outside Vashi Railway station in Mumbai, is now a famous chain in India and abroad. Prem Ganapathy started a small-scale South Indian breakfast joint in Mumbai in 1992. He ran the show in a hand-drawn cart and a cooking stove, for which he paid a rent of AED 50 (Rs 1000) per month.

Comment the name of the dosa in making. Hit like if you have tasted either of two!

In no time his business grew and he decided to turn his roadside stall into a mini restaurant. Ganapathy then began experimenting with dosas and began learning various techniques and recipes from the internet. In a while, the restaurant dished out a whole menu dedicated to dosa fans. The eatery had more than 30 types of Dosas served to the customers and true to its USP, Ganapathy named the restaurant ‘Dosa Plaza’.

The restaurant gained immense popularity in no time and became a huge hit among South Indian foodies. By 2012 Dosa Plaza had several branches overseas, including the current one in Sharjah.

On The Menu

As for the menu, foodies who love South Indian cuisine are spoilt for choice in this tiny eatery. If you wish to start off with something sober, go for their idlies and crispy vadas, served with tangy sambhar and chutney. They also serve Fusion idlies like  Manchurian idli, Pudina Idli, Pudi idli and Schezwan idli.

As for dosas, there’s a huge list out there. From the traditional masala dosa to Mexican and Chinese fusion dosas and a special Family dosa, there’s a lot for dosa lovers to pick from. In case you are going as a gang, we highly recommend the limited edition family dosa, which is four feet long and makes for a sumptuous meal.

If you’re up for something adventurous try their salad dosa (AED 21), stuffed with Russian salad and mayonnaise. Cheese lovers can binge on the Mexican varieties, which come loaded with a generous serving of cheese.

What Else?

Idlies and dosas aside, Dosa Plaza also has a dedicated rice plaza serving South Indian delicacies like Puliyodharai, biryani, curd rice, tomato rice, bisibele bhaath and more.

Lastly, if you wish to steer away from authentic South Indian delicacies, order a Bombay chaat or a sandwich. The restaurant also has a dedicated section for Punjabi delicacies and a Bombay-Chinese fusion section for those who like it with a slight twist.

Finish your meal with a tall glass of fresh juice, falooda, lassi or a fruit mocktail.
