There are plans to build a 50 km Automated People Mover system at the Al Maktoum International Airport, which is coming up in Dubai. This would allow people to easily move across the future airport. Set to be the world’s largest APM system, it is being developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and here’s all you need to know about this massive development coming in from the airport.
Al Maktoum International Airport To Get Driverless Train System
The Al Maktoum International Airport has been creating buzz ever since it was first announced. And the latest updates surrounding this massive airport are the fact that it will be home to a 50 km automated people mover system. The system would connect nine stations across the future airport.
It would comprise 165 automated people mover vehicles. As mentioned in the report of Gulf News, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, who were also responsible for the construction of Dubai Metro in 2011, mentions how it is scheduled to be completed by December 2031, which is ahead of the planned 2032.
Plans To Connect Major Facilities & The Terminal
It’s worth mentioning that the mega mover system contract has been given to MHI as a three-company consortium. Yes, this includes MHI Mobility Engineering Services and Larsen & Turbo, which is an Indian engineering and construction group. With an underground train system to be introduced, this would make getting around the airport a lot more convenient and quicker since it’s going to be one massive landmark. The system plans to connect the airport terminal and major facilities. This would allow people to meet the travel needs of the growing number of passengers. Moreover, the introduction of the system would also reduce travel time for passengers while boosting efficient airport operations.
The Airport Is Going To Be Quite Massive
However, it’s worth mentioning that one must not confuse the service with the existing train service at the Dubai International Airport. The journey to and from multiple destinations at this airport would take anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes due to the massive size at which the Al Maktoum International Airport is being revamped. And since these journeys would take longer than the typical shuttle service, according to the plan, there will be seating on the carriages so that passengers don’t have to keep standing for long periods of time between the stops.
Al Maktoum International Airport, as you already know, is expected to be completed by 2032. Once the airport is completed, it would span 70 km² and would have five parallel runways. With 430 aircraft gates, the airport would have a capacity to serve up to 260 million passengers. Not to mention, it would also be able to handle 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.
So, with this new system being introduced at the airport, it seems that airport buses would soon become a thing of the past in Dubai.
