India has rolled out a digital version of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, giving more than five million OCI holders worldwide, including thousands of Indian expats in the UAE, a faster and paperless way to prove their status while travelling.
What Is The e-OCI Card?
The e-OCI is an electronic version of the physical OCI booklet that can be stored and displayed directly from a smartphone. It lets cardholders present their credentials at immigration counters and to airline staff without carrying the physical document. Importantly, the existing OCI booklet remains fully valid — the e-OCI is an added convenience, not a replacement.
Why It Matters
The launch is part of India’s broader digital governance drive, which also includes the FCRA 2.0 portal. For expats, the biggest gains are quicker verification at airports, reduced risk of losing or damaging the physical card, and real-time access to identity details while travelling.
Who Is Eligible?
Only existing OCI cardholders can generate an e-OCI. There is no separate application process — it is generated directly from an applicant’s existing OCI record on the official portal.
How To Download The e-OCI card: Step-by-step
- Log in: Visit ociservices.gov.in and sign in with your existing User ID and password. First-time users must register with the email ID used in their original OCI application.
- Open the e-OCI tab: From the dashboard, select the e-OCI section, where existing application details will appear.
- Generate the card: Click “Generate e-OCI Card” against your record.
- Download and save: Save the generated card securely on your phone or device.
- Use while travelling: Show the digital card at immigration counters or to airline staff whenever needed.

Lost Access To Your Registered Email?
If the email linked to your OCI account is no longer accessible, you can update it by re-registering with a new email, choosing “OCI Miscellaneous Services,” and submitting your passport details, OCI number, date of birth and supporting documents. Approval must come through before the e-OCI can be generated.
Good To know
OCI holders still need prior permission from the FRRO or an Indian Mission for activities such as research, journalism, mountaineering, missionary work, or employment with foreign missions, and require special permits to visit restricted or protected areas in India.
