Cairo Launches Its First Women-Only Buses; To Operate Every 15 Mins During Rush Hour

Getting across Cairo during rush hour is already exhausting. Crowded buses, packed stations, endless traffic. For many women, the daily commute also comes with another layer of stress that people don’t always talk about openly. Now, authorities in Cairo are testing a women-only bus service along the city’s Ring Road as part of the larger Bus Rapid Transit system. The buses are running every 15 minutes during busy morning and evening periods. Officials say the move came after repeated requests from passengers, especially women commuters who wanted a more comfortable option during peak travel times.

For many commuters, it’s not really about luxury or special treatment. It’s more about feeling less stressed during long journeys in overcrowded traffic. Anyone who’s travelled during Cairo rush hour probably understands immediately.

That said, reactions online have been mixed, too. Some people praised the idea for offering women more privacy and comfort, as mentioned in a report by Scene Now.. Others questioned whether separate buses are the long-term answer. But for now, authorities appear focused on testing whether demand stays high enough to expand the service later.

Cairo Is Pushing More Public Transport Changes

The women-only buses are part of Egyptian Bus Rapid Transit, which is trying to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and use public transport instead.

Officials say the wider network aims to reduce traffic congestion and fuel use across Greater Cairo. Which honestly feels badly needed, considering how heavy traffic gets around the Ring Road almost every single day.

The buses themselves are electric and locally manufactured.

People Can Switch Between Metro, Rail And Buses More Easily

One reason the new network could actually help residents is that it links with multiple transport systems already operating across Cairo.

Passengers can move between the bus system and Cairo Metro Line 1 at Zahraa and El Marg stations. It also connects with Line 3 at Adly Mansour and Imbaba, plus the light rail network at Adly Mansour.

For many workers and students, smoother connections usually make the biggest difference. Nobody wants three separate stressful commutes before even reaching work.
