The UAE moon sighting committee met on a virtual meeting on Friday night. Following this, the Committee announced that Sunday May 24 will mark the beginning of Eid Al Fitr in the UAE.

The committee could not spot the Shawal month crescent moon on Friday evening, and hence declared 23 May to be the last day of Ramadan. Sunday, 24 May will be the first day of Eid Al Fitr.

Going by the Islamic calendar, Eid Al Fitr holidays will be from Ramadan 29 until Shawwal 3 for both sectors.

Ramadan 29 falls on Friday, May 22 and Shawwal 3 falls on Tuesday, May 26. This means all public and private sector employees will now enjoy a five-day weekend.

Meanwhile, residents are advised to celebrate Eid at home this year. The government announced a fine of AED 10,000 for those who organize gatherings and a fines of AED 5000 for those who attend it.
