Ensure Delivery Of All Checked-In Baggage Within 30 Minutes Of Landing By Feb 26: BCAS Directs Airlines

One of the most annoying things at the airport is waiting endlessly for your baggage at the carousel. More often than not, airports tend to delay baggage delivery due to multiple flight landings. Now, however, this won’t be a concern any longer! As per a direction by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), airlines will have to deliver the checked-in baggage within 30 minutes of flight landing. Read on to learn more about this order.

The security wing of the Civil Aviation Ministry, BCAS has ordered airlines to deliver all baggage within 30 minutes of flight arrival. As per the order, the airlines must deliver passenger baggage to conveyor belts within the mentioned time frame. This will help “avoid congestion at airports and to have better security.”

According to the Quality Requirements of Operation, Management and Delivery Agreement (OMDA) mandate, “the first bag should arrive at the belt within 10 minutes of engine shutdown, with the last bag arriving within 30 minutes.

This order comes after a research exercise. To track the arrival time of baggage at belts, BCAS ran a monitoring exercise in January. This exercise was concentrated at six major airports in India. Although the names of the airports weren’t mentioned in the statement, it revealed that most airlines “fall short of the mandated standards.”

BCAS has instructed airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Akasa, SpiceJet, Vistara, Air India Express Connect, and Air India Express to adhere to this new mandate. They have even set a deadline – February 26 – for these airlines to implement the required measures to ensure this order. The order has been issued for compliance across all airports they operate in.

Wow! If timely implemented, this will solve one of the most exasperating things about travelling from a flight! Good going, BCAS!
