The historic Duvvada railway station in Andhra Pradesh will be completing 120 years of service in 2023. The station which came into existence in 1903 started gaining significance after the expansion of Vishakhapatnam city and the industrial boom in the region. Duvvada lies in the southern part of Vishakhapatnam and is a part of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC).

After the establishment of the Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant in 1982, Duvvada and its adjoining regions gained more prominence. The industrial revolution in Vishakhapatnam prompted a large chunk of its population to shift from the main city to the southern areas. The Duvvada railway station became a central point for the commuters living in areas like Aganampudi, Ukkunagaram, Lankelapalem and NTPC township.

Duvvada Railway Station Serves Over 10 Lakhs Passengers Daily

Today, Duvvada station is the lifeline of the ‘Vishakhapatnam Industrial Belt’ and receives around 108,000 passengers daily. Some express trains that run through Duvvada station include the Ratnachal express, the Jhanmabhoomi express, the Simhadri Express, the Tirumala Express, the Ratnachalam Express, the Godavari Express and the Dakshin Express, to name a few.

The Station Sits On The Howrah-Chennai Main Line

The Duvvada station sits on the Visakhapatnam–Vijayawada section of the Howrah-Chennai main line. It lies at an elevation of 151 feet and has four platforms. It comes under the Waltair division of the South Coast Railway. Interestingly, Duvvada was a village when the railway station was launched, Now, it is a flourishing suburban zone in the Vishakhapatnam city. It is home to a Buddha statue at Dammagiri, the Vignan Engineering College and the luxury hotel Quality Inn Ramachandra.

After industrialisation, the Duvvada railway station underwent a plethora of renovations. The old station building, which existed since 1903, stopped operations in the 1990s. The construction of the new station building began in 1996, as reported by The Hindu. The station earned ₹8.8 crores from the passengers in 2018-19.
