In the chaotic city of Mumbai, we found a spot that resonates beauty, serenity and a sense of calm. The Global Vipassana Pagoda at Gorai is the perfect answer to peace in Mumbai
What Is It?
The Global Vipassana Pagoda has been created as an expression of gratitude towards the Lord Buddha. It mainly serves as a meditation hall and is open to everyone – absolutely free of charge. You can come and soak in the peaceful interiors and take time out to find yourself.
The GVP has been funded entirely by grateful meditators. In fact, the beautiful, hand-crafted wooden doors of the institution are a gift from Myanmar. In fact, the pagoda faces Myanmar and is a replica of the country’s Shwedagon Pagoda.
What Else?
The meditation hall is the largest stone dome in the world and is not supported by any pillars. Once you enter the dome, you’ll feel the difference in temperature as the natural stone creates an ambience of serenity and calm. The building itself is 96.12 metres high. The stone enclosed meditation hall can hold 8000 meditators at a time. Anybody can come and meditate at the GVP. However, to be a part of the larger meditation courses in the main hall – you need to be chosen and can’t just register.
