Flat Rates No More As Goa Taxis Could Soon Be Running On Meters!

If there is one thing that annoys every tourist that visits Goa, are the taxi fares. Be it from the airport or the bus stop, the flat rates burn a hole in the pocket, the moment you reach.

This was receiving a lot of criticism from those visiting the state, and in the light of this situation, the state government was ordered by the Mumbai High Court to get digital meters installed in plying taxis. This had to be implemented from August 1 onwards, and the state authorities failed to do so.

Recently, the court was hearing a petition filed by the Travel and Tourism Association Association of Goa, which is collective industry of stakeholders. The court then further emphasised that the needful had to be done at the earliest.

It comes as no surprise that the Goa taxi sector has been facing a lot of criticism from the tourists, the civil society and a few of the major stakeholders. In fact, despite being such a popular place, one can’t find any app-based taxis as well, which also causes hassle. Some of the privately operated taxis, have made sure that the are able to maintain a stronghold over the monopoly so that an average tourist isn’t left with much choice.

Seeing the impositions by the Bombay High Court, we can now only hope that it is implemented soon and digital meters are installed. This might also help in less traffic jams during peak season, as a lot of people might end up opting for cabs than hiring their own transport.

Hopefully, by the time we end up booking our tickets to Goa for the next trip, we won’t have to pay Rs 1500 – Rs 2000, of flat rate!
