Well, as we know, Goa is the most preferred, millennial vacation destination. But it is high time that we accept that Goa is also the most overrated, crowded and overhyped destination. Like me, are you too looking for a peaceful destination which is less crowded, filled with serene beaches and beautiful waterfalls and places with historic importance? Gokarna is one such place! I would even go overboard and say – Gokarna is the new Goa! In Gokarna, you can also enjoy a session of yoga under a treehouse.
Gokarna is a town in Karnataka which has super clean beaches with crystal clear water. People come to Gokarna in search of a peaceful vacation, away from the chaotic life and closer to nature. And one of the reasons Gokarna is pulling the attention of people is the commercialization that changed the face of Goa! It was once a beautiful destination, right now it is just any other vacation destination on the map.
Here’s Why Gokarna Is Better Than Goa
For starters, Gokarna is super affordable and even then you won’t find a lot of crowd at the tourist spots. The most important part for me on a vacation is – less human interaction and more interaction with nature! But if you have ever been to Goa, you would notice it is nothing different than Dadar station at crowded hours. Nobody wants that.
1. Gokarna Beaches Are Secluded
But in Gokarna, you will find the exact opposite of it, these far and wide running beaches will not be seen with any garbage or untidy shacks. Om Beach, Kudle Beach, Paradise Beach, Nirvana Beach and Half Moon Beach are some of the must-visit beaches. They are so clean, peaceful and serene that you would want to spend most of your time here.
It is also said that at night the Nirvana beach glows!! The phenomenon occurs due to the activity of phytoplankton, they emit a glowing blue colour at night making it look magical. Imagine you are sitting on the beach at night, appreciating the star-studded sky and you also see these magical blue waves! The view be heavenly! Much better than Goa.
2. Gokarna Offers Beach Camping Experiences
Forget the cliche hotel stays of Goa and come stay at these tents in Gokarna at the beach. You can sign up with any camping website and book yourself a tent at the beach. Here at night you can start a bonfire, appreciate the star-studded sky and even the glowing blue waves at Nirvana Beach. Imagine spending a magical night with bae at one of these beaches!
3. Visit The Mahabaleshwar Temple
Mahabaleshwar is the second-best place to visit in Gokarna after beaches. It is a Hindu temple built in the 4th century and ever since then has been a sight of attraction in the town. Mahabaleshwar Temple is built in the classic Dravidian style and the architecture if the entire place will leave you stunned. If you are up for a visit to a religious place, then Mahabaleshwar temple should be on your list.
4. Pay Your Tributes At The Majestic Shiva Statue
This Shiva statue in Murudeshwar is the second-largest shiva statue in the country. Murudeshwar is not very far from Gokarna, it is an hour-long drive till there, but take my word for it, the statue is worth the visit. Just looking at it, you sure will be mesmerized! All the shiv- bhakts, this place should be on your bucket list!
5. Spend Time At The Breathtaking Jog Falls
Jog Falls in Karnataka is one of the best places to visit in Karnataka and interestingly it is the second-largest waterfall in the country after Nohkalikai Falls in Meghalaya. River Sharavathi River flows down from the height of 253 meters making it one of the best spots to visit in the country. Jog fall is one of the prime tourist spots and it is a 2-hour drive from Gokarna.
Do you need any more reasons to visit Gokarna over Goa? Well, until you travel to this gorgeous beach destination of Gokarna, you can go on a beautiful virtual tour to Hampi, another tourist gem of Karnataka.
