Mumbai-based chef Velton Saldanha (@chefvelton) turned his Hyderabad trip into a fun food adventure. After spending around 12 days in the city, he planned to go back home with biryani worth about ₹5000. But things got a little exciting at the airport when he was charged ₹4200 as excess baggage fees. Instead of leaving the biryani behind, he paid the fee and carried food worth around ₹9200 back home. For him, saving the biryani was more important than saving money.
In talks with Moneycontrol, Velton said these trips are almost like a family tradition for him. He runs a food business called Chutney Collective. Every few months, he travels to Hyderabad mainly to bring biryani for his father, who has never visited the city’s famous food places. What started as a sweet gesture for his father slowly turned into a bigger food mission. Now he also brings biryani for his friends, which is why his luggage keeps getting heavier each time.

His Favourite Spots In Hyderabad
Velton also shared his favourite biryani spots from Hyderabad on Instagram. His list included Nalli Ghosht Biryani from Krishna’s Kitchen and Antera, Chicken Biryani from Tosh-e-Daan, Safed Biryani from Savya, Sufiyani Biryani from Voila F9 Gourmet, and Lamb Shank Dindigul Biryani from Monastery. He also enjoys Nalli Ghosht Biryani from Telangana Spice Kitchen.
According to Moneycontrol, during this trip, he travelled from Hyderabad to Pune and then to Mumbai. He didn’t realise how much food he had packed until he reached the check-in counter. That’s when he found out his luggage had crossed the airline’s weight limit. Even then, he decided to pay the extra charge rather than waste the food. His mother jokingly called him crazy for spending so much, but Velton was happy because he could share the biryani with his loved ones.
