From June 1, Two Wheelers & Heavy Vehicles Will Not Be Allowed On Parel Flyover; Here’s Why

It seems that travelling by road in Mumbai is increasingly becoming an issue. With potholes and construction barricades galore, roads have become barely traversable. This problem might only get worse. From the 1st of June, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or the BMC is barring any two-wheelers or heavy vehicles from travelling via the Parel Flyover. This means that only commercial and private four-wheeled vehicles may pass on the flyover. A press release stated why the BMC had to take this step.

In a press release that came out on the 22nd of May, the BMC stated that it received a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Mumbai Traffic Police regarding the barring of heavy vehicles and two-wheelers. It will therefore install height barriers on the flyover which will prevent heavy vehicles from entering.

The statement also went on to specify why such a step had to be taken. It said that the BMC has started filling potholes in the Parel Flyover ahead of the monsoon season so as to avoid causing any inconvenience to the people travelling on it.

It said that each year, heavy vehicles on the flyover cause potholes. This inconveniences others who travel on it. Hence, the decision to ban heavy vehicles was taken. However, the stated reason does not justify the banning of two-wheeled vehicles. Understandably, the decision does not sit well with many citizens.

Citizens Express Apprehension Over The Move

The move by BMC means that public transport like BEST buses will no longer be able to avail the flyover. It has raised several questions in the minds of citizens. For instance, instead of banning buses —a mode of transport that most people from the working-class use— why not make sturdier flyovers?

The ban will only worsen the traffic situation in the area. According to a PTI report, the Delisle Bridge, which is next to the Lower Parel station, is already experiencing heavy traffic. With this new mandate in place, the situation will only get worse.
