The 18th century saw the construction of Fort Gobindgarh. The fort was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the great Sikh king known as the Lion of Punjab. The fort, strategically located at the junction of the Sutlej and Beas rivers, functioned as an important military bastion, protecting the Sikh Empire’s western frontiers. Throughout the years, it has seen several fights and conquests, each leaving an indelible mark on its towering ramparts.

The fort, occupied by the Bhangi kings until 1805, featured 25 canons positioned atop its ramparts. The British army occupied it from the middle of the 19th century until Indian independence in 1947. During that time, they constructed several defensive upgrades to the fort to accommodate new weaponry.

Finally, in 2006, recognising the historical significance of this fort, the Government of India handed over vacant control of the fort to the Government of Punjab for maintenance and conservation. Every evening, there is a laser, light, and sound performance, as well as a drama called The Whispering Walls based on Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s bravery case. The fort is currently being transformed into a theme park and museum, serving as a historical archive for Punjab.
