Travelling across India, South India lately, digital creator Hugh Abroad has given fine-dining spots a miss for local fare. In Bengaluru, he has been on the lookout for budget-friendly breakfasts, chai, and more. The vlogger time and again has praised India for its budget-friendy quality food that costs less than a dollar for a dish. Here are some of his tried and tested Bengaluru spots.

1. Brahmin’s Coffee Bar

At the OG darshini, operating since 1965, Hugh Abroad stopped by for Khara Bhaat and filter coffee. A small steel plate of Khara Bhaat, a spicy semolina breakfast dish bathed in coconut chutney is almost flung in front of him, in style. Costing $0.70 (₹60) for a plate, Hugh enjoyed the semolina fare and compared its taste to “warm couscous.” The filter coffee was “tremendous” for him with its balance of bitterness and sweetness.

2. Taaza Thindi

The next brekkie destination, Bengaluru, was Taaza Thindi for Hugh, a place known for its quick, pocket-friendly meals. His order included a single vada, idli and coffee, all amounting to just $0.48 (₹41). Hugh enjoyed the soft and smooth idli and the crunchy vada as he dunked them in generous amounts of coriander-coconut chutney.

3. Sridev Special Kulfi

Another favourite haunt of the vlogger is Sridev Special Kulfi, a pushcart serving kulfis on sticks. The vlogger tried a dry fruit kulfi laced with almond slivers. He combated the city’s 36°C heat with a cardamom and almond-flavoured kulfi, which left him refreshed. Hugh Abroad finally found the best kulfi in India at Bengaluru’s Sridev Special Kulfi. It was so good that he rated it 10 on 10, relieved that it didn’t taste of cardamom, unlike other kulfis he has tried so far.

The vlogger’s escapades to South Bengaluru also brought him to Bombay Snacks Centre in Basavanagudi. From a variety of deep fried snacks, he chose plates of samosa and kachori, topped with green chutney, chopped onions and a mixture. While he found the aloo filling spicy, he enjoyed the samosa’s crisp texture. When it comes to the kachori, he didn’t quite enjoy the lentil casing in it and preferred the samosa instead.

Hugh Abroad has also stopped on the streets for samosa, fresh fruit juices and fruit bowls, the vlogger likes to give his fans a taste of the city’s wholesome street food culture.
