A visit to a restaurant brings joy in the hearts of people. The feeling of digging into a freshly prepared and beautifully presented meal, whilst engaging in conversations with your loved ones is unparalleled joy.  However, there are people out there who avoid visiting restaurants as certain ingredients may cause allergic reactions. Similarly, a customer recently shared a long food allergy list with the servers at a restaurant. Here’s what happened.

Redditor, @Rachelle_Rosey took to the microblogging platform to share a long food allergy list given by a customer on entering a restaurant. The viral Reddit post has a picture of a list of items that the customer is allergic to. It includes dried fruits, avocados, bananas, strawberries, dates, figs, prunes, eggplants, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, raisins, beans and more.

Protein that is not fresh and fish like tuna, mackerel and bonitos, belonging to the Scombridae family are also included. Aged cheese and foods which are pickled and fermented are also ingredients that the customer cannot consume. The Redditor alleges in the caption that the first item mentioned on the list — proteins which are frozen or leftover —isn’t an allergy,  it’s just pickiness.

This viral Reddit post witnessed many comments in the comments section. Many tried to figure out the possible reasons behind the customer’s elaborate food allergy. Others criticised the customer for visiting the restaurant with a list that makes it very hard to prepare a dish for them.

Redditors Share Their Opinions & Speculate Reasons

One Netizen commented that it could probably be due to histamine intolerance. Histamine is a chemical released to signal the brain to release stomach acid for digestion. It’s the immune system’s response to an allergic reaction or an injury. Certain foods like fermented products, alcohol and aged cheese contain high histamine levels. This can cause an imbalance in the body.

Another Redditor responded that cured and smoked heat are high in histamine. Also, re-heating food can also increase histamine. Also, the person added that the entire list is seen word-for-word on all Mast Cell Activation Syndrome( MCAS) websites. MCAS is again a condition that involves allergic reactions to certain foods. It has symptoms like hives, difficulty breathing, diarrhoea, low blood pressure and difficulty in breathing.

Yet another Redditor mentioned the customer was rolling their dice putting their health in the hands of people who were annoyed at them even having such a long food allergy list. Many agreed with this point of view. One even shared how they stopped eating at restaurants due to gluten and dairy intolerance. So, the Redditor was tired of sending food back as the restaurant wasn’t respecting the customer’s food allergy list.

A restaurateur on Reddit shared an incident where they had a customer who couldn’t eat a lot of things. So, the woman brought her own food and asked the servers to eat it up. The Redditor shares that they’d prefer this instance rather than having a customer who gives a long food allergy list.
