FSSAI Is Delisting Health Supplements With THIS Chemical Compound In The Ingredients List

Do you take health supplements to boost your immune system and take care of your health? These days, a lot of people consume these supplements to look after their physical health and take care of the intake of nutrients. In a recent incident, many health supplements are coming under the scanner of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. But why is FSSAI examining the ingredients used in such supplements?

Why Is FSSAI Delisting Some Health Supplements Available In The Market?

FSSAI initiated an inspection of the health supplements recently. The primary reason behind this examination is to emphasise the ingredients used in making the available supplements. The statutory body is focusing on S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine, according to a report by News 18. This chemical compound has some possible advantages for diseases related to liver health, arthritis, and even depression.

Patients should only intake S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine if prescribed by doctors. Consultation with doctors is a must before someone starts using supplements made with this ingredient.

During the scrutiny of the health supplements in the market, food inspectors are being advised to focus on the products with the chemical compound. If they see such products with an FSSAI licence, they need to delist those. This is a significant step by the authority and it has asked all the state and union territories of India to delist similar products with FSSAI license.

Just like its benefits, there is also the probable risk of negative impacts on people suffering from weak immune systems or bipolar disorder. The News 18 report further added how this ingredient found in health supplements has the probable chance to worsen anxiety, boost the growth of bacterium pneumocystis leading to infection, and more. Unfortunately, S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine can potentially become a risk to life as people may suffer from something as serious as Serotonin syndrome

Why Doesn’t FSSAI Approve Applications Related To The Molecule?

Previously FSSAI received several applications for granting the sale of health supplements prepared with S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine. They have simply rejected all such applications. FSSAI sent a letter to the commissioners of food of Indian states and Union Territories. This letter shared in detail how products or ingredients having this molecule are not considered a food category. Also, the concerned body has rejected or revoked the applications for this under the Food Safety and Standards Regulation.

FSSAI is not considering S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine as food because of its potential effects on different people. India is not only focusing on this molecule and a list of health supplements with the presence of it. There are many countries globally, where one can use this chemical compound only as prescribed medicines.

Do you buy health supplements from the market without a proper consultation with the doctor? If yes, it is now time to first book a session with your doctor, check the ingredient list of your supplements, and choose something that gives you health benefits and does not worsen your health in the upcoming days.
