Gangotri National Park Administration Blocks Access To Gomukh; Kanwariyas, Devotees And Local Traders Affected

Torrential rains have lashed Gangotri National Park, leading to the closure of the route to Gomukh, a holy site for Hindu pilgrims. This unexpected development has thrown a wrench into the plans of devotees and Kanwariyas alike, with local traders also feeling the pinch.

Notice boards erected at Gangotri Dham and the Kankhu Barrier inform visitors of the restricted access. This decision significantly impacts pilgrims undertaking their spiritual journeys and the Kanwariyas who participate in the annual Kanwar Yatra during the holy month of Sawan. Traditionally, Kanwariyas undertake a pilgrimage to collect sacred water from the Ganges River at Gomukh.

Local traders in Gangotri Dham have expressed their disappointment with the closure. Satendra Semwal and Deepak Rana acknowledge that heavy rains have caused culvert damage previously. However, they emphasise that the route to Gomukh has never been entirely blocked during the Kanwar Yatra. Their frustration lies in what they perceive as a deliberate delay in repairs by the park administration.

The recent downpour caused substantial flooding in the Devgad, Chidbasa, and Bhojgaddi drains within the National Park. The force of the water tragically washed away a culvert, alongside two Kanwariyas from Delhi. Thankfully, the State Disaster Response Force swiftly responded, rescuing 38 others trapped by the rising water levels.

In response to the traders’ concerns, RN Pandey, Deputy Director of Gangotri National Park, clarified the situation. He confirmed that workers are already stationed at the damaged site in Chidbassa. However, Pandey emphasised that construction work cannot commence until the water levels in the drains recede sufficiently.

The park administration’s top priority lies in ensuring the safety of all visitors. The relentless rain has rendered the route treacherous and unsafe for travel. The immediate closure is a necessary measure to prevent further accidents and ensure the well-being of pilgrims, Kanwariyas, and park visitors.

The temporary ban on access to Gomukh highlights the complex challenges faced by both authorities and local communities during extreme weather events. Striking a balance between ensuring visitor safety and addressing the economic concerns of local businesses dependent on pilgrimage tourism is paramount.
