According to an article recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, the reconstruction will be undertaken by the Adani Group. As per Karan Adani’s statement cited in the article, T1 had certain safety and structural issues.

This is primarily why the reconstruction of Terminal 1 is being undertaken. As per the TOI article, the new terminal will be ready in about three years from the time reconstruction begins. The Terminal will be razed a few months after the inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The reconstruction is being timed so that the new airport can bear the load of flyer capacity. This will reduce the inconvenience that flyers and airlines would have experienced otherwise.

Even though a significant flyer capacity will be moved to the Navi Mumbai airport, Terminal 2’s traffic is still expected to increase. As per the TOI article, this particular reconstruction project will result in an increase of 4.4 crore passengers annually or CPA at Terminal 2.

As of now, the airport gets a total of 5.1 CPA. 4CPA is handled by T2 and 1.1 CPA is handled by T1. Other details like the cost of construction of the new T1 are yet to be finalised.
