Romanch’s Law: New York Names Bill After Indian Teen Killed In Carriage Accident

What was meant to be a memorable family vacation turned into a tragedy when Indian teenager Romanch Mahajan lost his life after falling from a horse-drawn carriage in New York City’s iconic Central Park. The incident reignited long-standing concerns about the safety of horse-drawn carriage rides and renewed calls for stricter regulations. In a significant development, New York City has now renamed its proposed horse-drawn carriage ban bill “Romanch’s Law” in memory of the teenager. Here’s everything you need to know about this.

What Is New York’s Proposed Romanch’s Law?

New York City has renamed its proposed horse-drawn carriage ban bill “Romanch’s Law” in honour of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan. The announcement was made on Monday during a vigil held for the Indian teen, whose death in a Central Park carriage accident sparked renewed debate around the industry.

According to NDTV, New York City Council member Christopher Marte, who organised the vigil, said that the legislation he had originally introduced as “Ryder’s Law” would now be renamed “Romanch’s Law.”

The bill aims to gradually phase out the horse-drawn carriage industry by preventing the issuance of new carriage licences. If passed, horse-drawn carriage operations in the city would be prohibited from June 1, 2028.

The legislation was initially named after Ryder, a 26-year-old carriage horse that collapsed while pulling a carriage in August 2022, an incident that had also reignited concerns about the industry’s safety and welfare standards.

What Happened To The Indian Teen?

A few days back, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan fell from a horse-drawn carriage after the driver reportedly stepped away to take a photograph of the family. At that moment, the horse allegedly bolted, collided with another carriage, and overturned, causing the teenager to fall and die. According to Romanch’s father, the 18-year-old was trying to save his mother after she fell from the carriage. In the process, he also fell and suffered a fatal head injury.
