The Indian aviation landscape is witnessing a significant transformation as Vistara, the full-service carrier, operates its final flights today before merging with Air India. This consolidation marks the end of an era, leaving Air India as the sole full-service airline in Indian skies. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about Vistara, its history and origins and its merger with Air India which is owned by the TATA group.
Goodbye, Vistara! Airline To Fly Its Last Flights Today
Vistara began operations in January 2015 as a joint venture between the Tata Group, which has a 51 per cent stake and Singapore Airlines, which has a 49 per cent stake. The merger will see Singapore Airlines retain a 25.1 per cent stake in the merged entity.
According to an article which was recently published by Business Today or BT, the transition will affect more than 115,000 passengers in the first month. These passengers will now fly under the Air India banner, though the group has assured that the signature Vistara experience will remain unchanged.
The airline’s flight codes will transition from ‘UK’ to ‘AI 2’, for instance, UK 955 becoming AI 2955. To ensure a smooth changeover, help desk kiosks will be established at airports, with international terminals featuring clear signage to guide passengers to appropriate check-in counters.
The Origin Of This Iconic Airline
The Vistara contact centre will seamlessly redirect enquiries to Air India representatives, whilst loyalty programme members will be integrated into Air India’s scheme. Vistara’s emergence followed the 2012 policy change under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government, which permitted foreign airlines to acquire up to 49 per cent stake in domestic carriers.
Vistara had distinguished itself as the only full-service carrier to commence operations in India’s skies over the past decade. This merger, therefore, marks a pivotal moment in Indian aviation history.
