In terrible news coming from Gulmarg in Kashmir, a massive fire broke out in the famous Maharani temple where the Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz hit song, Jai Jai Shiv Shankar was filmed. The fire engulfed the temple overnight, reducing it to ashes. This temple was a popular piligrimage spot in the valley. Read on to know more about this devastating incident.

Maharani Temple In Gulmarg Engulfed In Massive Fire

Maharani temple, the famous Shiva temple in the ski resort, Gulmarg was reduced to ashes in a massive fire on Wednesday morning. Sources revealed to Kashmir News Trust that the fire broke out at around 3:45 am on June 5. Despite, the fire service station in Gulmarg and local police taking timely action, the iconic temple was completely damaged. This was because it was built entirely out of wood. Police have registered a case to ascertain the case of the fire.

Mohineshwar Shivalaya or Rani Temple or Maharani Temple became well-known after the Bollywood song ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ of the movie Aap Ki Kasam was filmed there. It starred Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. The Maharani Temple was built by Mohini Bai Sisodia, the wife of Maharaja Hari Singh in 1915. It was managed by the erstwhile royal family. and operated by the Dharmarth Trust.

Indian Army Had Restored This 106-Y0 Temple In 2021

In 2021, the Indian Army teamed up with the locals to renovate this 106-year-old Shiva temple in Gulmarg. Apart from the structure itself, the Indian Army redesigned the pathways leading to the temple. It was resurrected and reopened to the public in 2021. With an opportunity to contribute to the plural heritage of Kashmir, the Army had restored this temple on the behest of its devotees.

The Muslim caretaker of the temple, Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh had stated to The Statesman that the community in Gulmarg must continue with its service. Unfortunately, this temple burnt into ashes in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. We hope this temple is restored to its former glory. And the investigations help spread light on the cause of this massive fire.
