Severe forest fires are currently raging across multiple regions of the Himalayas. The situation in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir has now turned into a major crisis, as the smoke has reduced visibility and damaged nearby areas. But have you ever wondered why forest fires have become so frequent?
Forest Fires Reported In Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand
A forest fire or wildfire is an unpredictable fire that burns vegetation in natural areas such as forests. According to News18, a massive forest fire has been reported in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, once again raising concerns about the environment. And not just Solan, but over the past several days, multiple forest fires have also been reported in Uttarakhand in districts like Almora, Pauri, Chamoli and Rudraprayag. Forest fires can cause extreme damage to vegetation, wildlife, nearby areas, and infrastructure. But why are these forest fires happening so frequently?
According to experts, heatwaves and dry winds are one cause, but the Chir pine tree (Pinus roxburghii) can also trigger fires. Chir pine trees dominate large parts of the lower Himalayan belt in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Unlike Oak or Deodar forests, Chir pine forests are highly combustible, which means they can catch fire very easily.

Why Do Chir Pine Forests Catch Fire Easily?
According to News18, every summer, these trees shed large quantities of dry needles known as ‘pirul’. These needles contain resin, which makes them extremely flammable. As they accumulate in thick layers across forest floors, even a small spark from a cigarette butt or roadside fire can turn into a rapidly spreading wildfire. Reportedly, a recent study by researchers from CSIR-IHBT found that Chir pine forests account for nearly 57% of forest fire incidents in the western Himalayas.
Moreover, forest fires can also be triggered by heatwaves, climate change, and reduced winter rainfall. Certain human activities, such as discarded cigarettes, campfires or roadside burning, can also trigger wildfires. Once fires enter ecosystems dominated by Chir pine forests, they become extremely difficult to control.
What do you think of this? Do you think that Chir pine forests are one of the causes of forest fires in the Himalayas?
