Historic Landmarks, A Thriving Ship-Making Industry, Gujarat’s Mandvi Has Much to Offer!

Not many might have heard about this historic coastal town located in the Kutch district of Gujarat but this place is famous for its ship-making industry.  Enter Mandvi, an old city situated on the banks of the Rukmavati River, about 56 km from the district headquarters of Bhuj.

Mandvi’s Rich History Of Ship-Making

The ship-making industry in Mandvi is believed to have originated during the reign of the Kutchi ruler, Rao Khengarji I, who invited skilled carpenters and ship-builders from Saurashtra and Kutch to establish a ship-building yard in Mandvi in the early 16th century. Since then, the industry has flourished and has become an important source of livelihood for the people of Mandvi, passed down through generations.

The ship-making process is a combination of traditional techniques and modern technology designed to withstand the rough seas and strong winds. The ships are called Kachchhi ships, named after the Kutch region where Mandvi is located. The Kachchhi ships are traditional sailing vessels that were used for trade and commerce in the Arabian Sea.

Moreover, they are known for their unique design, which is well-suited for navigating the shallow waters of the Gulf of Kutch and the Arabian Sea.  The Kachchhi ships are now primarily used for tourism and are a popular attraction in Mandvi.

However, the ship-making industry in Mandvi has faced several challenges in recent years, including competition from modern shipyards and a shortage of skilled labour. But, efforts are being made to preserve and promote the traditional ship-making techniques of Mandvi.
