Hong Kong To Witness Super Typhoon Saola; All You Need To Know About This Phenomenon

The South China Sea is currently grappling with a super typhoon. The region of Hong Kong is currently gearing up to prepare for it. So far, signal no. 8 NW has been issued for Typhoon Saola. This means that all transportation, schools, government, businesses, etc. have been suspended for the time being in order to avoid any threats or danger towards human life. People in the region are also advised to not leave their homes unnecessarily.

Typhoon Saola: All You Need To Know

Typhoon Saola is being referred to as a super typhoon. Super typhoons are those tropical typhoons that are faster than 185 kilometres per hour or 100 knots. The Typhoon Saola is approximated to be around 120 knots.

According to the official website of the government of Hong Kong, the areas that will be worst hit include Sai Kung, Sha Tau Kok and Tai Po as well as Shing Mun River. These are all low-lying areas where there might be a threat of flood as water levels rise.

The website also warned people to stay away from the shoreline and to not dabble in any water sports until the storm has passed. Although it is said that the storm will only lightly scrape the shore of Hong Kong if it makes landfall, a higher threat signal will be issued for it.

Hong Kong’s Storm Signals

The storm is also said to be on its way to China and the authorities in the country are gearing up to prepare for it. The Hong Kong Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals is a system of estimating the threat level of tropical cyclonic storms.

It has a total of five levels, one of which is divided into four sub-levels. The levels are Signal No. 8NW 1, 2, 3, 8NW, 8SW, 8NE, 8SE, 9 and 10. Signal No. 8NW has been issued for typhoon Saola.
