For the fourth time since December 2023, Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula experienced a volcanic eruption on Saturday. The lava of this eruption flowed dangerously close to Grindavík town. For now, an emergency has been declared in Iceland since this is believed to be the most powerful eruption so far. However, tourists are not advised against visiting Iceland yet. How Safe Is It To Travel To Iceland Right Now?

The latest volcanic eruption in Iceland’s Reykjanes is said to be the most powerful one to hit the area in recent times. So much so that the residents of this region, around 4,000 in number, were advised to evacuate the area with just a few minutes of notice. Although a dormant volcano, the volcano in the region has erupted for the fourth time since December. They received text messages for the same and a state of emergency was declared in the area.

While this has panicked the natives, this news has also made tourists planning to visit Iceland anxious. For now, tourists are not discouraged from travelling to Iceland. The UK Foreign Office and the US Department of State have not issued any advisory against travel to Iceland yet. However, they have warned tourists to avoid travelling to the affected areas in the country for now. These areas are mainly around Grindavík, the Reykjanes Peninsula. Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s famous geothermal spa, will also remain closed until further notice by the authorities.

The flights in Iceland are operating normally right now. All flights to and from the country are operating on time. However, it is advised to keep checking your airline’s website to know about any updates. Many airlines are also actively updating their flyers in case of any changes. Since the authorities are not advising against travelling to Iceland yet, tourists can go ahead with their trip as planned. So, if you wish to cancel your plans right now, you won’t be able to get full refunds. However, if there is any emergency and Iceland issues some advisory against travel, then you might be liable for compensation.
