Iceland has been experiencing one of the worst volcanic eruptions in the last 50 years. The magma crept its way to a small fishing town and many houses there caught fire. It is important to note, however, that no harm to human life or deaths occurred because the town had already been evacuated. According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, despite the widespread damage, flights are operating as per usual in and out of the country. There will be no interruptions in their operations.

This volcanic eruption is the fifth one in the area since 2020 and it began on January 14, Sunday. During 2020, the volcano became active again after remaining dormant for as long as 800 years.

Most of the 3,700 people of the town of Grindavik evacuated in November. However, this latest eruption prompted another evacuation of the town.

Earlier, the town had built a rampart or a barrier from earth and rock with the aim of protecting the town against eruptions. However, because of the latest eruption, this particular barrier was breached.

The area had been dormant for 800 years. However, in 2020, seismic activity in the region commenced again. In 2021, this seismic activity resulted in the emergence of lava. The eruption on Sunday is the fifth one since then.
