The monsoon season in India is a double-edged sword, providing a much-needed respite from the intense heat while also causing potential disruptions with heavy rains. On Wednesday, this dichotomy played out across the nation. Some regions celebrated the cooling rains, while others braced for potential disruptions. Delhi was issued a yellow alert while Haryana and Punjab had an orange alert.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Delhi

Delhi and its surrounding areas experienced a dramatic weather shift, awakening to heavy showers after weeks of relentless heat and stifling humidity. The downpours brought not only relief from the heat but also significantly improved air quality. The Central Pollution Control Board reported that Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) dipped into the “satisfactory” category, a marked improvement from the hazardous levels experienced earlier.

Widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected across West, Central, East, and South Peninsular India for the next five days. Isolated areas within Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, and Maharashtra face a high risk of extremely heavy rainfall on July 24. Several other regions have a high chance of very heavy rainfall during the forecast period. These include Odisha (July 24-26), Konkan & Goa (July 25 & 26), Madhya Maharashtra & Gujarat (July 25-28), Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh (July 24), and Kerala & Mahe (July 25).

IMD Issues Warnings

Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is expected across most of Northwest India for the next five days. Some areas in Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana could experience isolated very heavy rainfall on July 24. Isolated heavy downpours are possible in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and East Rajasthan throughout the period. Punjab and Haryana brace for another day of high humidity and scorching temperatures.

The Northeast gets drenched with widespread light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, for the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is possible in Arunachal Pradesh (July 24) and Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur (July 24-25).
