Here are a few key things to note about Indian Railways ticket concessions to various categories like students, scouts, guides, etc.

What Is It?

Indian Railways offers travel concessions to various categories like students, scouts, guides, farmers, sports person, industrial workers, senior citizens, handicapped people and more. The concession ranges from 10 per cent to 100 per cent as mentioned by Indian Railways on its portal – indianrailways.gov.in. However, the online portal of Indian Railways offers a concession for senior citizens only and the rest can be availed at the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter.

To apply for a Senior Citizen Certificate, you need to fill out an application form along with all the required documents, you will receive your certificate once your application is approved and your documents are verified.

Documents required would be Proof of Age which could be either of these – Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Pension book, School leaving certificate, etc. Proof of Name, Medical information and Photographs – 3 stamp size photographs. You can reach out to any nearby centre for the submission of these and it will take approx 60-90 days for processing your ID after the day of submission.

What’s In It?

The key things to keep in mind are the concession is admissible on basic mail, express, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, etc fares only and not on ordinary fares applicable to passenger trains, superfast surcharge, reservation fee and Goods and Service Tax (GST) tax.

Availing two different types of concessions by the same person for the same journey is not permissible, the concessional ticket cannot be changed to a higher class even if the passenger is willing to pay the extra fare.

Concession is not admissible for a journey where the cost of travel is borne by central/state governments/local bodies/corporations or government undertakings, universities, etc. Break of journey en-route is not allowed on a concession ticket unless it’s a natural event.
