“As we all know, Mr. Tata had a deep passion for flying machines, and I was only too pleased to see Air India return to where it truly belonged,” Bhatia said in reflection on Tata’s long-standing love of aviation. He emphasised his determination to see to it that Air India and IndiGo, the country’s biggest airline and a subsidiary of InterGlobe, collaborate to establish India’s legitimate position in the international aviation arena, Business Standard reported.

The significance of Tata’s influence in the industry is underscored by his role in the revival of Air India. Tata Group regained control of the airlines on January 27, 2022, after nearly 70 years. Bhatia also highlighted how this change represents Tata’s vision for the future of Indian aviation.

Speaking of his personal interactions with Tata, Bhatia recalled an instance from 1985 in which they talked about the Tata Group, Nortel (which was then known as Northern Telecom), and InterGlobe. The conversation was about them possibly working together to produce digital telephone switches. According to Business Standard, Bhatia said that the project was abandoned. However,  Tata’s candour and humility had a profound effect on him.

As tributes poured in, thousands gathered at Mumbai’s NCPA lawns to pay their respects. During this difficult time, Bhatia expressed his condolences to the Tata family and the workers of the Tata Group. He reaffirmed IndiGo’s dedication to upholding Tata’s vision and fostering the expansion of Indian aviation. He also shared his conviction to make India a major player on the international scene.

Bhatia concluded, saying, “In honour of Mr Tata’s passion for aviation and his vision for its future, IndiGo will, ever so modestly, walk alongside Air India.”

This statement encapsulates the shared ambition of both airlines to elevate India’s presence in global aviation, reflecting Tata’s enduring legacy.
