Under the Digi Yatra movement, India plans to introduce facial recognition at Bangalore and Hyderabad airports by Feb 2019.

What Is It?

Good news for Indian travellers, because your face will be your boarding pass soon as Bangalore and Hyderabad airports roll out the facial recognition scanners by Feb 2019. The Ministry of Civil Aviation hopes to release a facial recognition technology at Indian Airports to cope with delays at congested airports and improve the passenger-clearing process by making it easier and faster. The first ones will be Bangalore and Hyderabad, after which Pune, Kolkata, Varanasi, and Vijayawada will launch it by April 2019.

This move is done keeping in mind the Digi Yatra programme by the Indian Government. It’s PM Modi’s vision to make India entirely digital and eliminate any paper use.

What Happens Now?

At airports, passengers will no longer need to wait in queues for security and boarding pass check-ins, because facial recognition will ensure a faster and seamless travel experience. Passengers won’t have to show their ID proofs and boarding passes, because the facial recognition will save their biometrics and personal information.
