Switzerland retained its number-one spot as the best country this year. This is the second consecutive year that Switzerland has ranked 1. The United States slipped down to 5th rank!

With 16 entries, European nations dominate the top 25 on the list. The only Asian nations in the top 25 are South Korea (21), Singapore (16), China (20), and Japan (6th).

The only Middle Eastern nation in the top 25 is the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is ranked 19th. Zimbabwe, Cyprus, and Honduras are now included in the Best Country Rankings for the first time.

Each year, US News & World Report compiles a list of the “Best Countries” based on a variety of criteria. These criteria are broken down into 10 thematic sub-rankings, which are Adventure, Agility, Cultural Influence, Entrepreneurship, Heritage, Movers, Open for Business, Power, Quality of Life, and Social Purpose.

For the ranking, a total of 17,195 people from 36 nations across the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East were polled. Participants were given a randomly selected subset of nations and national traits to think about.
