Earlier this year, there was a rift in the diplomatic relations between Maldives and India. Since then, many Indian tourists have boycotted Maldives and are refusing to go there. If reports are to go by, then Indian tourists make up a large chunk of the tourists who visit the country. Hence, the boycott, it seems, has been quite effective. As a matter of fact, where Indians used to be the top visitor demographic in the country, they are now in the sixth position. Here are all of the important details that you would need to know about this.

According to an article which was recently published by News18, Maldives witnessed the arrival of more than 17 lakh tourists in the year 2023. Out of them, more than two lakh tourists were Indians. However, in 2024, after Indians started boycotting the island country, the number dropped.

As of March 2, 2024, the number of Indian tourists arriving in Maldives has dropped to as low as 27,224. Last year, the corresponding number was 41,224. This means that there has been a 33 per cent decline in the number of people visiting the country.

This data is taken from the statistics by the Maldives Tourism Ministry. India used to be at the top of the list of countries that visited Maldives the most. Now, it has slipped to the sixth position.

After Indians, Russians were the largest visitors to the island country in 2023. Close to 2.1 lakh Russian tourists visited the country during that year. Then comes China with more than 1.8 lakh Chinese tourists visiting Maldives in 2023 alone.
