What Is The Story Behind Chef Harpal Singh’s ‘Namak Shamak’ Song?

During the Tere Gully Mein episode, chef Harpal Singh talked about his show Turban Tadka and iconic song. While discussing the show’s format, the director asked him how he wanted others to remember him, to which the chef did not have an answer. Hearing his response, the director walked away, saying there would be no shoot. He added that the shooting would begin only once Harpal Singh had an answer to the question.

Chef Harpal Singh went home and felt somewhat depressed as he could not come up with an answer. He then spoke to his younger daughter, Antra, about it. At that time, she was reading a book called Mahatma. He picked up the book and started reading it. After two or three days of reading, he came across the chapter on Satyagraha. In that chapter, it was mentioned how Mahatma Gandhi started the Salt Satyagraha with simple element.

What Is The Simplest Ingredient In Food?

After thinking about it for a few days, chef Harpal Singh realised that the most important yet often overlooked ingredient in food is salt. People rarely talk about this ingredient and usually mention it only when there is either too much or too little of it. Being a Punjabi, he thought of creating something around salt, inspired by the common habit of saying words like “lassi-vassi” or “chai-shai.” And that’s how the iconic ‘Namak Shamak’ came into existence.

He then decided to add a jingle whenever he added salt to a dish. In his videos, Harpal Singh would sing, “Namak Shamak, Namak Shamak daal dete hain,” which became hugely popular at a time when Facebook and Instagram were not widely used. The chef believes that people will continue to remember and talk about it for at least one century.
