Not every Bollywood lesson comes from acting school. Some are learnt on film sets, passed down through years of experience, and occasionally revealed over brunch to the amusement of an entire table. That is exactly what happened during the latest episode of Sunday Brunch with Kamiya Jani when the conversation drifted towards something unexpectedly relatable, which was hugging people when you really don’t want to.
Esha Deol Opens Up About Not Being A Hug Person
In the middle of the laughter-filled chat, Esha Deol shared a trick she had picked up from her mother, veteran actor Hema Malini. The topic came up while discussing scenes that require actors to get physically close to their co-stars. While such moments may look effortless on screen, they are not always comfortable for everyone involved.
Esha admitted that she isn’t much of a hug person herself. That confession immediately set the stage for a story that had everyone at the table laughing.
According to her, Hema Malini had figured out a clever workaround years ago. If an actor found themselves in a scene where a hug was required but didn’t particularly want to fully embrace the other person, there was a simple trick. Instead of wrapping both arms around the co-star, place your hands firmly on their shoulder.
The Acting Hack Hema Malini Taught Her
That’s it. The move looks perfectly natural on camera, but it also gives the actor complete control over the distance between them and the other person. The shoulder placement acts as a subtle buffer, preventing the hug from becoming any closer than necessary while still convincing audiences that a warm embrace just took place.
The revelation instantly cracked up both the ladies. The sheer practicality of the hack, combined with Esha Deol’s admission that she personally relates to it, made the anecdote even more entertaining.
She also pointed out that her mother had spent decades navigating the realities of the film industry, which meant learning countless little tricks along the way. Some help actors hit their marks, while others help them handle awkward situations. And every now and then, one of those tricks turns out to be a masterclass in avoiding unwanted hugs without anybody noticing.
