“I Had To Do An Intimate Scene With The Most Desirable Woman”: Shekhar Suman On Romancing Rekha

You don’t expect a conversation about one of Bollywood’s most intimidating romantic scenes to begin over a plate of Maacher Jhol. Yet that’s exactly how the afternoon unfolded. The latest episode of Sunday Brunch with Kamiya Jani featuring Shekhar Suman took viewers inside his striking four-storey Parisian-style home overlooking the sea. The setting was elegant as ever, but the mood wasn’t formal. There were stories, laughter, food, and the kind of easy conversation that only happens when someone is revisiting memories they have carried for decades.

Shekhar Suman Recalls Filming Intimate Scene With Rekha

At one point, the discussion drifted to his first film. Years may have passed, but the nervousness of that particular experience clearly hasn’t.

Imagine being a newcomer, your career has barely begun. You’re still figuring out where to stand, how to face the camera, how not to look terrified. Then someone tells you that your co-star is Rekha! 

Not just Rekha the actor, but Rekha the phenomenon. For Shekhar Suman, the challenge wasn’t simply acting opposite a star. It was performing an intimate sequence with the woman he describes as the most desirable actress of her time, and, as he quickly pointed out, still one of the most desirable women in Indian cinema.

The scene itself demanded a certain closeness. It was raining, and Rekha’s character arrives at his home. There’s a romantic moment, jewellery gets tangled and the camera captures chemistry. What it couldn’t capture, however, was the storm unfolding inside the mind of a young actor trying desperately to stay composed.

Years later, he can laugh about it. Back then, laughter was probably the last thing on his mind. The road to the film had its own twist.

When Shekhar first met Shashi Kapoor, the actor looked at him and delivered what should have been the best news imaginable.

“You’re the hero.”

For a brief moment, the dream was complete. Then came the second sentence.

“But there’s one more thing. Rekha has to agree.”

The role wasn’t entirely his yet. Somewhere, a decision still had to be made. A nod of approval still had to come from one of the industry’s biggest stars. It eventually did.

Shekhar got the part, stepped onto the set, and found himself living the very situation that had once seemed impossible, sharing screen space with Rekha in his debut film.

Listening to him recount the story today, seated in a sea-facing home built over four floors and a lifetime of experiences, one detail stands out. Success tends to erase the awkward beginnings from public memory. Actors become stars and careers become legacies.

But every so often, a story like this slips through and reminds you that before the confidence, before the fame, before the applause, there was a young man trying not to panic while filming a romantic scene with Rekha.
