Kanpur feels different when you follow its food trail, and that’s exactly what Curly Tales did in the latest episode of Tere Gully Mein. Our guide for the day was none other than Kapil Kanupriya, a familiar face in Kanpur’s arts and media circuit, someone who knows the city as much through its lanes as through its stories. The afternoon was a riot of flavours with fluffy chole bhature, the quirkily named badnaam kulfi, the cult-favourite Thaggu ke laddu, and finally, the comfort of bun maska with malai chai. 

Kapil Kanupriya Shares Thaggu Ke Laddu After Effects

Among all the plates on the table, one sweet stole the spotlight. The conversation turned playful when Thaggu ke laddu arrived. Kapil Kanupriya leaned in with a grin and said that these laddus come with a ‘bahuratha” effect. Of course, that begged the question: what does bahuratha even mean? His reply demonstrated pure Kanpur wit: “Jab Bombay jaoge, chakkar aayega… aur wapas yahin aana padega. Round trip maarna hi padega.”

In other words, these laddus don’t just melt on your tongue; they pull you back to Kanpur like a magnet. Leave once, and you’ll find yourself circling back just to eat them again. Suddenly, it was clear why this mithai has become more than just a local favourite; it’s almost a calling card of the city.

Thaggu Ke Laddus Bollywood Connection

Creamy, rich, and laced with khoya, the laddus are famous not just for their taste but for their wickedly clever tagline: “Aisa koi saga nahin jisko, humne thaga nahi.” Kapil Kanupriya laughed as he reminded us that this very line escaped the walls of the shop and travelled all the way to Bollywood. Director Shaad Ali, who grew up in Kanpur, liked it so much he slipped it into his 2005 hit Bunty Aur Babli. And suddenly, a kulfi catchphrase had become a piece of pop culture.

The setting added another layer to the story. The ground where Kapil and the team were standing, he revealed, was where parts of Bunty Aur Babli were actually shot. And if that wasn’t enough, Kapil Kanupriya shared one more nugget of trivia: when Abhishek Bachchan tied the knot, this piece of deliciousness was on the wedding menu. 

The way Kapil Kanupriya described them as simple, almost understated, made the laddus sound even more irresistible. He said that they have a rich mix of mawa, khoya, and badaam, dense enough to be gooey yet soft enough to disappear in a bite. That duality is perhaps what makes them unforgettable.

And the pride on his face as he spoke? That said more than words ever could. Just as bun maska and chai will always whisper of Bombay’s Irani cafés, Thaggu ke laddu carry the unmistakable accent of Kanpur.

By the end of the shoot, it felt like the episode wasn’t really about dishes lined up on a table, it was about the stories they carried. Kapil Kanupriya, with his warmth and one-liners, turned the trail into a nostalgic walk through Kanpur’s flavours. And Curly Tales, true to its style, managed to bottle that nostalgia on screen.
