Can You Shift To An Empty Seat On A Plane Before Takeoff? Here’s What An Expert Says

Have you ever boarded a flight, spotted an empty seat that looks way better than yours, and wondered if you could just move before takeoff? Well, we have all been there! While it might seem like a harmless idea, switching seats mid-boarding isn’t as straightforward as it appears. Here’s what a former pilot said about this and what you should know before making the move.

Swapping seats before takeoff can be tricky and is not as simple as it may seem. While talking to The Independent, a former Virgin Atlantic captain, Pete Hutchison, explained that switching to empty seat from one part of the flight to another can be dangerous. It can make the flight behave unpredictably, especially during takeoff and landing.

The reason? The plane’s balance! He explained that swapping seats to unplanned areas or in significant numbers can hamper the flight balance. If there were more passengers in the front of the aircraft, it could make disembarking difficult or even impossible in some cases, he explained

On the other hand, if most of the passengers were to sit at the back of the plane, it could affect the aircraft’s balance during takeoff or cause the tail to scrape the runway while landing.

It’s All About Balance!

Right from the crew and passengers to baggage, cargo and fuel, all weights on the aircraft have to be distributed evenly to maintain its balance. In fact, it’s not just about the front or back of the plane; the flight crew also considers whether passengers are seated in the middle, window, or aisle seats to ensure safe takeoff and landing calculations.

Beyond safety violations, unless it’s absolutely necessary, asking crew members to switch their seats before takeoff can even cause a delay in flights. If you have concerns about your seating, it’s best to ask the flight crew for guidance. But don’t assume that an empty seat automatically means you can switch—that’s not how it works!
