Delhi could soon look very different after sunset, with the Master Plan of Delhi 2047 laying the groundwork for a potential 24-hour economy. Announced on Thursday, the long-term plan envisions parts of the capital staying active well beyond traditional business hours, with restaurants, markets, cultural venues, workplaces and public spaces operating late into the night. Read on to know more.

Delhi To Become A 24×7 Party City

As per a report by News18, the plan promotes the idea of a “24-hour city” by identifying specific nodes, centres, and cultural circuits that could attract residents and tourists after dark. Instead of allowing popular areas to empty in the evening, Delhi could see markets operating late, cultural venues hosting night-time events and restaurants extending their hours.

Several well-known areas have been recognised as potential anchors for Delhi’s night-time economy:

  • Connaught Place: Already a popular nightlife spot, it could see more organised late-night activity.
  • Hauz Khas: Its cafes, bars and cultural spaces could operate for longer hours.
  • Chandni Chowk: The Walled City could become part of a heritage and cultural night circuit.
  • India Gate lawns: Envisioned as a major public space for evening and night-time activities.
  • Nizamuddin and Chirag Dilli: Identified as potential cultural circuit nodes.
  • Mehrauli: Another urban village that could see more organised after-dark activity.

The plan also suggests transforming underused spaces such as old quarries, landfills, ash dykes and defunct thermal plant sites into public and event spaces.

More Than Just Late-Night Restaurants

As per the news portal, the proposed 24-hour economy would go beyond keeping shops and restaurants open. The plan includes extending operating hours for retail, sports and cultural facilities, subject to approvals from the relevant civic agencies.

It also proposes pedestrian-friendly “active travel areas”, night markets, themed walks and seasonal festivals developed with local artists, vendors and residents. Green-blue corridors and heritage circuits could further encourage people to explore Delhi after dark, with the Delhi government’s Tourism Department and local bodies expected to identify and develop these areas. For a genuine night-time economy to work, Delhi will also need reliable late-night transport. The plan highlights round-the-clock connectivity and extended Metro services as important requirements.

Without safe and convenient ways to travel home after midnight, longer operating hours could have limited impact. The biggest challenge will be implementation. Longer operating hours would need to be supported by adequate policing, street lighting, pedestrian infrastructure, public transport and coordination between civic agencies.
