In a video gone viral, a girl can be seen gasping for breath in an overcrowded train. The scene is hard to watch, as a teenage girl inside a sweltering train compartment is suffocating as a crowd presses in from all sides. She fumbles at the window latch for a breath of relief and splashes water over her face to keep from passing out. Around her, phones are raised, not to call for help, but to record her weary plight.

The video, posted on X by user Woke Eminent, has ripped through social media feeds and is currently sparking outrage and disgust. Its caption reads, “A girl was almost suffocated stampeded into a train coach and she was running out of breath. The crowd on the platform was laughing and mocking her. What do you call such behavior?”
The post tagged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Railway Ministry, and Railway Seva, demanding serious changes to crowd control before another festival season spirals into such a chaotic condition. He wrote, “Every festival the surge at railway stations and people entering trains without tickets surges, the mob rules the trains. Why can’t we have access control to railway stations at least during festival season and especially known stations which have massive crowds trying to get into trains? Deploy CRPF etc. at such stations during festival peak at selected stations and have access control for them during the peak. I Dont think its an impossible task…”
From the Indian Railways official Railway Seva account came a reply: “We are concerned to see this. Please share details like the place of incidence, the date of incidence and the mobile number so that we can get it checked. You may also raise your concern directly on https://railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in for speedy redressal.”

The Internet Reacts With Outrage
But the clip has taken on a life of its own, becoming a flashpoint for two parallel criticisms, namely the behaviour of the crowd and the preparedness of the railways. Comments have poured in, some shocked in their assessment of public apathy. “Indians lack empathy and severely lack civilised behaviour,” one person wrote, adding that emergency response skills must be taught in schools or “degeneracy will increase.”
Another noted the girl’s visible distress: “She is clearly having an anxiety attack due to the crowd and heat,” while someone else wrote, “No matter what those sitting in AC rooms say, our country has taken steps backwards in the last 11 years.” The video has triggered widespread outrage and also sparked discussions.

This raises a bigger and striking question: when crisis strikes in a public space, is help still the instinct or has the reflex to film replaced it? How we answer could determine whether festival travel remains safe and whether citizens trust one another and the institutions that protect them.
