What Is Namaste Abhiyan?
According to Times Now, launched by Western Railway in August 2025, Namaste Abhiyan is a large-scale ticket-checking initiative aimed at curbing fare evasion across Mumbai’s suburban rail network. The campaign derives its name from the folded-hands gesture used by officials while approaching commuters. It is a deliberate move to maintain civility during enforcement.
On August 6, Western Railway deployed 300 ticket collectors and 50 security personnel, including 30 from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and 20 from the Government Railway Police (GRP) into the station. Each officer was equipped with body-worn cameras and speakers. By the end of the operation, 5,192 cases of ticketless travel had been recorded. The fines collected amounted to approximately ₹13.5 lakh.
Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Vineet Abhishek, explained the vision behind the campaign, which summed up this dual objective: to enforce compliance and shift the public narrative around ticket checking from antagonism to professionalism.

But this was not just an attempt at damage control. In recent months, there has been a sharp rise in confrontations between ticket-checking staff and passengers. Many of these have escalated and some were even caught on camera. The Namaste Abhiyan is both a response and a message. It is polite, but also unmistakably firm.
This isn’t the Indian Railways’ first experiment with tech-backed discipline, but this campaign uses operational muscle. The namaste, performed sincerely, is a disarming gesture, backed by surveillance, uniformed presence, and instant penalty slips, as stated by Times Now.
